Must-Have Halloween Kids Books

October 21, 2021

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to decorate for. There is so much fun to be had and it’s slowly becoming my kid’s favorite holiday as well. Maddox and Mia love getting in the spirit, choosing one of these fun books to read each night.

In my classroom, each month I would have a themed bookshelf with a ton of read alouds for that week or month. I loved seeing my student’s faces when I would change out the books, they would get so excited.

I’ve complied a list for you of our MUST HAVE Halloween Books. Here’s our favorites and below is a short synopsis of each.  I’d love to hear what your favorites are, just leave a comment below.

E.T. – This classic tale is retold in the simplest kid terms and is a sweet, fun way of bringing a bit of an alien-vibe to your themed reading time.

Little Witch – An adorable story about a young witch who wants to go to school. This book is filled with inspiration for every young girl no matter the challenges they may face.

Bonapart Falls Apart – A silly and sweet story about friendship, helping a friend and accepting each other’s differences.

Gustavo – A simple story to be yourself and appreciate everyone. The most delightful illustrations make this one a must-have for your bookshelf.

Eenie Meenie Halloweenie – We love a good rhyming book, this one is a great, especially for the younger ages.

The Little Kitten – This is the sweetest little story, with a slightly magical, Halloween theme. Perfect for any cat lovers as well.

The Scariest Book Ever – This is a silly book that claims to be scary- but reader beware it’s a treat to read.

Vampire Ballerina – This is an adorable tale about what it takes to become a ballerina- if you’re a vampire. If you’re a fan of dance and cute, themed stories, this one is a great one to add to your list.

Gilbert the Ghost – Adorable little story with beautiful illustrations. A perfect add to your Halloween shelf.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything – Or is she? As the little old lady is walking through the woods she heard…. clomp, clomp, shake, shake, clap, clap. A fun and classic story for the littles in your life.

Mr. Pumpkin’s Tea Party – A fun counting story with the most beautiful water color illustrations.

Pick A Pumpkin – A fun tale of visiting the pumpkin patch and all the steps that follow in a vivid, brightly colored picture book.

Creepy Pair of Underwear – This silly, humorous story is about Jasper the bunny not being afraid of his glow in the dark underwear. But he tries to get rid of the an d everywhere he goes, there they are!

The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt – This sweet ghost is bummed because he is a thick quilt instead of a light sheet. Until one Halloween, everything changes. He has an experience that no other ghost could possibly have. He suddenly realizes, it’s ok to be different.

Ten Timid Ghosts – A rhyming, counting book for beginning readers. My kids LOVED finishing the sentence on each page.

How To Make Friends with a Ghost – If you’re looking for a fun adventure, THIS book has got you covered! With beautiful illustrations this one is filled with fun ideas to make friends with a ghost!

Room on the Broom– This classic, silly story is one that every household should enjoy during the spooky season. It’s light and fun and full of adventure.

The Good, the Bad and the Spooky – If you have read The Bad Seed, then THIS ONE will surely be another crowd pleaser. The Bad Seed goes through the trouble of thinking of a costume and the ending is just perfection!

Skeletons ARE NOT Spooky! – This creative book is a great one for a laugh. Your kids will surely love seeing the silly illustrations, and a GREAT reminder that Skeletons are not spooky at all!

Scary, Scary, Halloween – An absolute CLASSIC for every child. Full of detailed illustrations, your child will be engaged the entire story. A wonderful story with a surprise ending!

The Ugly Pumpkin –  One of my favorites to read during the shift from spooky Halloween season and the beautiful autumn season of Thanksgiving. A classroom must-have!

Cats Night Out – A charming counting picture book with dance and rhyme to keep your feline-lovers entertained.

Stumpkin – Stumpkin is such a lovable character. This is a great read for Halloween, without being scary or too mature.

Pig the Monster – A SUPER silly book about a Pug, named Pig and his naughty behavior. He eventually learns a lesson that all children need reminding of towards the end.

Pumpkin Jack –  One of my favorite classroom read alouds! This is a story about Pumpkin Jack that follows the cycle of a plant.

So there you have it! A complete list of must-haves. Go get yours now and start filling up that bookshelf. Your kids will thank you, I promise!

Shrek Jr. was absolutely AMAZING! 💚🎭I am beyond proud of Maddox for taking on such a huge role and absolutely crushing it as Shrek. Watching him own that stage with confidence, talent, and perfect comedic timing was something I’ll never forget. And Mia? She kicked butt up there! She brought so much energy and heart to every moment, and seeing these two shine together made this mama’s heart so full. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be humming “I’m a Believer” for the next three weeks… and wondering if we have room for a swamp in the backyard. 💚✨#maddoxzachary #maddoxandmia #shrekjr #shrekjrthemusical #actorsconservatorytheater ...
