December Book Review {2020}

book review

My favorite post of the month is book review day!! I listened to two audiobooks and read three and I must say…. it was a great month of reading! If you’re new here you will quickly learn that I LOVE thriller/mystery books. But I will try to throw in different genres to mix it up. This month I read two thrillers, one YA thriller, one romance and one fiction novel. If you’d like to see some other titles that I’ve read and reviewed before click here or check out the Book Review tab at the top of the site.

Alright, then let’s get to it! The first one up is…

Jar of Hearts – I LOVED this story! It was such a refreshing thriller because it was grounded in reality. The storylines are plausible and believable. It felt like a documentary because it was realistic. I didn’t like the fact that it was very intense (there is a lot of prison scenes) that are graphic. It reminded me a lot of Orange is the New Black for a minute. This story is about three best friends- one who was murdered, one went to prison and one who has searching for the truth all these years. Dark, chilling, edge of your seat thriller. Jennifer Hillier pulls out all the stops on this one! 4.5 stars

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – Pip is doing what my inner investigator heart dreams of… re-opening a murder case! I listened to this one through Audible and I LOVED it because it felt like I was listening to a true crime podcast at times. The theme is ‘social media’s role in investigation”. There were so many plot twists and multiple people on the list of suspects. And the end was so good and satisfying… you have to read it for yourself! Great YA/Mystery read. 5 stars

Invisible Girl – If you’re looking for a new mystery/thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat?! Then you need to check out Invisible Girl. This is a story about Saffyre, a young girl who has already lost so much then mysteriously disappears one night. Her invisibility proves to be her greatest asset during this disturbing and dark tale. My favorite thing about LJ books are the multiple storylines going on and the way they intertwine in the end is perfection. Jewell has a way of weaving small details that you don’t think matter until they come up later and you want to smack yourself for not picking up on it sooner. I loved this one and I definitely recommend it for a fun thrill ride! 5 stars

Room-maid – So after two intense thrillers I decided to take a break and pick up a rom-com. I should’ve known my feelings would be skewed because this is NOT the type of book I pick up usually but I wanted to branch out and give you guys some other options for your reading pleasure. This one starts as a riches to rags story about a 20 something girl, Madison that gets cut off from her wealthy family to pursue a career that her heart desires, becoming an elementary school teacher. In order to survive off her humble income she agrees to move in with Tyler as a room-maid. The agreement is simple, clean the house to live for free and don’t fall in love. (Enter eye-roll here) Just kidding, kind of…. Let me just say this, if you like Hallmark movies then this is right up your alley. It is a light, sweet, fun story that is very predictable. But if you need something to cheer you up this one will do it. It’s one you could recommend to your mother in law, but probably not your crazy girlfriend book club- yup, talking to you Breezy Book Club! 3 stars

The Midnight Library – Wow, oh wow! I was not expecting to love this book so much. It is a fiction/fantasy with some pretty dark undertones, but it was one of those that really made you think! Nora is the main character, full of regrets after attempting a suicide she ends up in a library where she gets to try out other lives that “could have” been. This was definitely a good story that reminds you of the importance of not taking what you have for granted and especially living each day to the fullest. This one is a great book, I would recommend it to anyone that is open to being reminded of the goodness of life! 5 stars

Well, that’s it for the month. I’m actually reading two Christmas/Holiday type books currently (a little after the fact). But I’m excited to share with you when I finish them up.

Now tell me, what are YOU reading?!

Shrek Jr. was absolutely AMAZING! 💚🎭I am beyond proud of Maddox for taking on such a huge role and absolutely crushing it as Shrek. Watching him own that stage with confidence, talent, and perfect comedic timing was something I’ll never forget.And Mia? She kicked butt up there! She brought so much energy and heart to every moment, and seeing these two shine together made this mama’s heart so full.Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be humming “I’m a Believer” for the next three weeks… and wondering if we have room for a swamp in the backyard. 💚✨#maddoxzachary #maddoxandmia #shrekjr #shrekjrthemusical #actorsconservatorytheater ...
